The Hong Kong Student Prize

The Hongkong Prize is an independent merit-based award that honors scientific research that brings benefits to society. The selection process is independent of sponsorship or personal interests; past winners include journalists who expose human rights abuses, activists working towards democracy in their own nations and community service workers providing vital assistance to marginalized populations. This year’s winner, Chai Yang of HKUST, is recognized for pioneering disruptive in-sensor computing paradigms for artificial vision sensors by performing information processing directly within their circuitry. Additionally, winning this prize affords researchers access to top universities and laboratories in Hong Kong – home to several Nobel laureates!

Established in 2012, the Hong Kong Student Prize is open to secondary school students enrolled in Hong Kong. A panel of expert scientists will select the winning entry based on its significance and impact on society; cash prizes as well as additional awards may be presented, including internship opportunities at University of Hong Kong labs.

Apart from monetary prizes, the Hongkong Prize gives participants an opportunity to experience Asian culture first-hand by traveling there and meeting all competition requirements before submitting an application. Failure to do so may result in costly errors which compromise winning opportunities and could significantly lower applicants’ chances.
