The Hillman Foundation presents The Sidney Prize as a monthly award that honors journalists who use investigative reporting for social justice purposes. The winner receives a $5,000 honorarium while two runners-up each receive $750 awards. Applicants of any nationality and journalism work can submit articles, but all must focus on social justice themes for consideration.
Rachel Ang has won the 2024 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize with her story ‘Thalassophobia’ which will be published by Overland magazine. Judges, along with Malcolm Robertson Foundation were particularly taken with its strong travel-themed entries which explored terrorism and climate change impacting people and places alike. First place earns them a cash prize of $5000 as well as publication in Overland autumn 2024 edition and online publication as a shortlist and runners up story will also be released online.
Sidney Hillman Foundation was established by Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America labor union in 1946 as a left-leaning organization that awards monetary prizes for journalism and public service. Led currently by Bruce Raynor – former president of Unite Here Workers United SEIU; as well as awarding journalism prizes it has donated millions of dollars towards causes supporting labor and working class interests.
Established by the NSW Maritime Museum in 2022, the Sidney Myer Fund Performing Arts Scholarships at the NSW Maritime Museum commemorate the memory of Sir Sidney Myer while supporting Australian performing artists and artistic pursuits. They pay homage to Sir Sidney Myer’s generous spirit and vision as an avid patron of the arts who dedicated himself to supporting his community – offering annually dance, drama, comedy and music performers the chance to win these scholarships.
