What is the Hongkong Prize?

The Hongkong Prize is one of the world’s premier writing competitions, drawing thousands of entrants every year. Winners receive both monetary prizes and the opportunity to attend an awards ceremony that can advance their careers and increase exposure in media outlets. Before entering, however, it’s essential that all rules and regulations are read thoroughly and followed closely so your submission is judged fairly without violating any guidelines.

This prize was established to encourage undergraduate and postgraduate students to conduct research into different aspects of Hong Kong history, relationships with China and Asia, new theories and concepts in studying Hong Kong history, politics, society and culture.

This year, nine artists from Hong Kong made it onto the shortlist for this year’s Art Prize – marking an all-time high since its establishment. Artworks that explored honour and disgrace were selected, such as Noormah Jamal’s Did the Seed Grow? painting. Proceeds from auction will benefit SAF’s Make It Better program which provides expressive arts workshops to children from disadvantaged communities.

Last year, Ten Years won the Hong Kong Film Awards’ best picture award – an unexpected triumph, after it incensed Beijing with its depiction of semi-autonomous Hong Kong. Ten Years’ final scene featured a protester self-immolating in front of the British Consulate – drawing out fearful sentiments among residents over Beijing’s increasing hold over Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has long been an active hub of culture and creativity, reflecting global change through various artistic forms. The Prize provides recognition, support and encouragement in creative work or arts projects; increased international visibility through top-tier media coverage; and access to an expansive network of collaborators.
